After Dolittle raid, Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku’s fear of a U.S. carrier strike against the homeland, deemed “unreasonable” by the Naval General Staff, had occurred unimpeded. The raid dissolved the “residual doubts” harbored within the Naval General Staff whether or not a thrust against the important U.S. advanced naval base at Midway, an important element in ADM Yamamoto’s plan to draw out the hitherto unengaged U.S. carriers, should be attempted.

May 5th,1942, the order to take Midway was formally launched. This operation aimed not only at taking Midway island but also destroying the US fleet which brought fear to the Japanese. A huge number of warships were despatched, including 8 carriers,11 battleships,22 cruisers,68 destroyers and many other ships. In the picture the Japanese warships were assembling in the inner sea of Japan and the close is the super battleship Yamato.
