Due to the large number of ships despatched, the fuel consumed in the operation was so much that it was almost equal to the annual IJN consumption in peace time. The fleet was divided into many sequences, the first of which was the Main Body, including 1 carrier, 2 seaplane tenders,7 battleships,21 destroyers and 3 cruisers.
In the picture the 3 battleships are Mitsu, Yamato and Nagato from close to far.Nagato was the lead ship of her class and she was the first battleship in the world to mount 16 inch class (actually 16.1 inch, or 410 mm) guns, and her armour protection and speed made her one of the most powerful capital ships at the time of her commissioning.She was the flagship of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto during the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the super battleship Yamato was built, her flagship position was replaced.
