These aircraft were the Japanese looking for Shokaku and Zuikaku. As the darkness made it difficult to distinguish, they regarded Yorktown carrier as their own carrier and were happy that they finally could take a rest. Two aircrafts had already started slowing down and put down their land gears to the deck of Yorktown.
It was too late when the Japanese realized they were wrong. The anti-aircraft fire had begun roaring in the darkness. Another 11 aircrafts immediately crashed into the sea.
