The Devastator torpedo plane, which was produced by the Douglas Company, started serving in the U.S. Army in 1937. It was the world's first widely used carrier-based, and the first all-metal covered, and the first monoplane which had foldable wings.
The aircraft also had a unique appearance, with its torpedo partly located in the fuselage, and landing gears not completely foldable, which could reduce the damage in forced landing. It had three crew members, responsible for driving, bombing and gun-shooting respectively.
