Ten years before the attack on Pearl Harbor trigering the Pacific War, the first air battles for Japanese Navy took place over Shanghai in China. Japanese army invaded and occupied Manchuria in China in 1931 and the following battles in China were focused on Shanghai, the largest Chinese harbor.
September 1937,Mitsubishi A5M,which was ususally referred to as "Claude", was developed by Japanese Navy as the first monoplane fighter and the new fighter immediately joined the battles near Shanghai.The new A5M soon replaced the biplanes from 1937 to 1938 with its excellent climbing rate and manuvermaneuverability.
July 1937,the Japanese Navy and Army agreed on their distribution of air invasion in China, the Southern part of which was where the Navy fighters were responsible to clear out the Chinese planes.In the picture, A5Ms from the carrier Kaga were patrolling in China Sea. |
