With the war going, the Americans developed more and more fighters with excellent performance, and one of them was the F6F Hellcat fighter. F6F was specially designed to combat zeros with the advantages of thick armor, strong weapons and long range. To a large extent,it was F6F Hellcat that acted as the terminator of "legend of zero".
October 15, 1943, four F6F Hellcats newly joining the war encountered Japanese zeros over Wake Island. As the Hellcats had a similar look with the old fashioned F4F wildcats, the Japanese pilots thought that they were only improved F4Fs. After the two sides met, the zeros still took their most often used strategy by circling the rivals and intended to overwhelm the enemy taking advantage of their better manuveribility.
