8:40, the second wave of attack arrived.8:42, 167 aircrafts commenced their attack facing the increasingly fierce anti-air fire. Only a few US planes took off between the two attacks but mostly of them were shot down by zeros.Later zeros began to fire on the airport runways and anti-air guns and they caused heavy damages to the ground facilities. Eight A6M2s were lost in the attack and most of them were shot down by AA guns.
In the morning of December 7, 12 U.S. battleships and many other ships were sunk or damaged. 188 aircraft were destroyed and 155 were damaged. 2403 Americans were killed. During the following 6 months,the U.S. Navy was unnable to do anything significant in the Pacific battlefield.Without the threat of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Japan overwhelmed other powers in Southeast Asia and quickly took the entire Southeast Asia and Southwest Pacific.
